As December moves along, many Central Oregonians are wondering, Where is the snow? After Mt. Bachelor announced on Nov. 28 that their opening day would be postponed, skiers and snowboarders alike have been patiently waiting for Mother Nature to work her magic. However, temperatures in the upper 50s and even 60s have prevented any kind of snow from falling.
This has left many Central Oregonians bummed after experiencing last year’s season, which started on Nov. 15, the earliest opening Mt. Bachelor had seen in 26 years. Now this season, the mountain might be seeing the latest opening day since the 2008/2009 season, which had an opening day of Dec. 14.
However, Mt. Bachelor is not the only mountain experiencing a dry spell. Mountains and resorts all over the Pacific Northwest are still waiting for snow. Oregon resorts including Timberline, Mt. Hood Meadows, Skibowl, Willamette Pass, and Hoodoo have had to postpone their opening days due to the same kind of high temperatures and low snow amounts.
All hope is not lost however: The forecast shows temperatures decreasing back down to the 30s in the near future. Apps like OpenSnow and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s seven-day forecast show that snow is coming to Mt. Bachelor around Dec. 16 with amounts ranging from 4-8 inches at night and 2-4 inches during the day with more to come in the following days. Keep doing your snow dances and wax your skis or snowboards – snow is on its way!
