Last Friday, Central Oregon Community College hosted the second-annual “Jam on the Hill,” which featured 33 snowboarders and nine skiing competitors. Over 200 people attended the rail jam.
A total of 20 competitors made it into the finals. Taking first place in the men’s snowboarding category was Jordan Welter. First place for the skiing competition was Connor Bennett and in the women’s snowboarding category, Kelly Underwood took first place.
The competition was broken up in to two main heats, or preliminary races. The first heat featured men’s and women’s snowboarding. The second heat featured men’s and women’s skiers but also included several snowboarders to balance out the numbers.
In each heat the competitors were judged based on overall impression, trick variety, level of trick difficulty, style and how they use all the different rail features, according to the event’s announcer Grady Marold.
First place winners of the competition receiveda cash prize of $100, a box full of merchandise from the event’s sponsors and bragging rights. Three top finalists were selected for each category except for men’s snowboarding, which had five top finalists. Each of the top finalists received an invitation to compete in the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour Finals presented by Galvanic Design, which will take place in Portland, Oregon on May 27, 2011.
