Parodies on the pulse of pop culture

Whether you love or hate pop culture fads, there is no denying the deep joy and satisfaction that can come from seeing a well-done parody that gently (or not so gently) mocks the people and things the media and the mainstream love best. This week, I present my favorite supplement to Saturday Night Live—some amazing YouTubers who make parodies.

The Hillywood Show

The Hillywood show is a channel comprised of surprisingly polished parodies of popular movies in music video format. They got their start with a ten-minute video of re-shot scenes from “Twilight” with lyrics from Katy Perry’s “Hot N’ Cold,” and after more Twilight saga parodies, they began parodying other movies. Whether or not their choice of movies to mock suits your taste, The Hillywood Show is a talented group of people. Channel favorite: “Twilight” parody

Venetian Princess

Venetian Princess is the defining standard by which all other parody-ers should be measured. A one-woman operation, Venetian Princess is amazing at getting into character for the various songs or celebrities she mocks. Her videos are fun, well-shot and edited and a source of endless amusement.
Channel Favorite: The Snooki Song (Ke$ha parody)

Dave Days

From his ashamed (according to his Facebook) beginnings, Dave Days has risen to the top of the YouTube-ing game. His parodies range widely, from an Ikea parody of Owl City’s “Fireflies” to “If I Were a Girl,” a hilarious parody of Beyonce. Dave Days also does non-parody covers of popular songs, which are good, if not excellent.
Channel favorite: Baby parody (Justin Beiber) ft. Tay Zonday (the Chocolate Rain guy)
Honorable mention:

This YouTuber actually only has one parody on his channel—a cover of “Baby” by Justin Beiber in a Starcraft 2 setting. The rest of his videos are of Starcraft 2 games narrated in a sports game style.
