The Central Oregon Community College men’s soccer team is firing on all eight cylinders this season, having shot out of the gate with a 6-0 start, the best start in head coach Scott Milum’s nine years at the helm of the team. This was a start that was accentuated by a decisive eight to nil victory over Mt. Angel Abbey.
“It’s been excellent,” said Intramural and Club Sports director Bill Douglass, “This has been a great season for them.”
Despite the fantastic start to the year however, the ‘Cats have struggled a little bit as the season winds down, winding up in second place after dropping the last two games on the road with two more games left to play this term.
The strain of the away games and the difficulty in being able to be available to make the trip due to schoolwork or other obligations has been a bit of a setback for the ‘Cats, but Milum is not concerned.
“We always start off strong in terms of numbers,” Milum said. “The last couple of games, we used three guys from our bench to fill in for the regular starters.”
The normal tradition of the season flowing from fall term to spring term has come to an end recently as well, and according to Coach Milum that makes those losses–and the last two games of the term–all the more important.
“In order to finish first we have got to win these next two games,” said Milum, referencing COCC’s next match next week on Nov. 20, where they will travel to Corvallis to match up against Western Oregon University, and then the final game of the term against Willamette University on the fourth of December in Salem, whom COCC defeated earlier in the year.
“It has been a good year even though the team fluctuates pretty rapidly,” Milum added.
