On Oct.5, 2017, a New York Times story by reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor was made public for allegations that have been whispered for years. One of the most powerful men in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein, who made films that made millions at the box office and won dozens of Oscar nominations, was a sexual predator whose abuses were covered up by his studio with hush money payments.
The She Said movie, written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and directed by Maria Schrader is based on the book of the same title by reporters Jodie Kantor and Megan Twohey. Profound actors, Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, star as the two New York Times reporters who tirelessly try to expose the sexual allegations towards renowned producer, Harvey Weinstein. The rated R movie follows the investigative work of the two reporters and shows how their lives become consumed in the story and seeking the truth.
Mulligan and Kazan are excellent as always with their performance in this skillfully made movie. Their support from actors Patrcia Clarkson and Andre Braugher as their editors don’t go unnoticed. The scenes with Weinstein and his lawyers are among the movie’s highlights. But it is infuriating to see what Weinstein got away with for so long. The movie never mentions the names of the board of directors who kept signing off on millions of dollars in hush money payments.
The critics gave this newly released movie an 87%, while the audience scored it 90%. People say that the story helped launch the #MeToo movement and shattered decades of silence around sexual assault in Hollywood. Though, the movie does a good job of showing the unfortunate reality of how difficult it could be to retrieve resources that could shed light on men in power. It makes you think; who will write about all the other Weinstein’s?
