COCC team heads to triathlon nationals

This will be the third year the college is sending students to compete in the Collegiate Triathlon Nationals. Last year, Central Oregon Community College sent five male competitors. This year they are sending seven male and three female, according to Matt Plummer.

The Collegiate Triathlon Championships is part of a triathlon festival which is one of the largest triathlons in the world. Schools that will be represented include Harvard, Ohio State University, University of Miami, USC, UCLA, and Stanford.

“I previous years it’s been about gaining experience for our program and our athletes. This year is much more about competing,” Plummer said.

Andrew Jensen, Max Amundsen, Kyle Roe, Martin Marquez, Breck Flanagan-Caldwell, Greg Hendryx, Patrick Losson, Abby Brown, Emily Eshleman and Hailey Murdoch will all be competing May 4 in Lake San Antonio, California.

The team has been organized since the end of fall term and have been training exclusively for this race since January. However, for some the training period has been much longer.

“For those with triathlon experience, they’ve been preparing for this for years,” Plummer said.
