COCC dedicates the campus Veterans Center at noon on Thursday

Central Oregon Community College will dedicate its new Veterans Center at noon on Thursday, June 2. COCC President James Middleton, Dave Cooley from the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs and representatives from the offices of U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley and U.S. Rep Ron Wyden will participate in dedicating the center.

The center, which will be used primarily as an informal lounge and meeting place for students who are veterans, is located in Room 219 of the Campus Center on the COCC Bend campus.

“It will be a place for our veteran students—and others who support veterans—to relax, connect with other vets, discuss resources and to have a dedicated place of their own on campus to help them be successful here at COCC,” said Gordon Price, director of student life.

In addition, Martin Ornelas, the campus veteran service officer from the Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs, will use the space to meet with students.

Ornelas maintains a rotating schedule among five colleges. He will next be at COCC June 1-2 and 14-15. For information, call 503-559-3460.

The majority of the funding for furnishing the center came from The Keye’s Trust. Officially named the COCC Memorial Education Fund, the trust was established by the estate of Margaret J. Keyes, who passed away in 1988. The fund is used for educational purposes and is administered by the COCC Foundation.

For information about the center, call 541-383-7211.
