Central Oregon Community College students Brandi Jordan and Dulce Pelayo were the two recipients of the 2012 Diversity Achievement Awards, May 24.
The award “seeks to recognize those faculty, staff, and students who make valuable contributions to our campus community in a way that supports and fosters a respectful and inclusive multicultural environment” according to the COCC website.
Pelayo works extensively in the Latino community promoting education and has served as a college mentor in the Oregon Leadership Institute. Pelayo is working on a research project to help reduce the drop out rate of Latino youth.
Jordan has served on the Diversity Committee and through work on the subcommittee helped address the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Jordan was instrumental in developing the Safe Zone program and assisted students in the process of re-starting the Gay Straight Alliance.
