The success of the occasion could lead to similar events in the future

The semi-final matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup were two high-power matches that determined who will play to be named as the best footballing nation in the world.
This extraordinary event has not gone unnoticed by the Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College, who hosted a party for both days of the semifinal round, June 6 and June 7.
“We knew the World Cup was really popular around campus because so many people asked about a place to watch the matches during the preliminary stage,” said ASCOCC member Brenda Pierce. “Now that we have the Campus Center, the student body’s getting used to the idea that this is where to go to watch big sporting events.”
Pierce also mentioned that there is a ‘good possibility’ ASCOCC would hold similar events for other big time sporting events such as the World Series, Super Bowl and the NBA Finals.
Students came down and watched these explosive matches in the downstairs television area in the Campus Center. Food of all kinds purchased by ASCOCC from Subway was served, and soccer related prizes were given out to the best dressed fans, as students are encouraged to wear their favorite team’s shirt, favorite colors and even paint their faces up to support their side.
Noisemakers were also encouraged, though it has been confirmed that the dreaded vuvuzela was not seen among those noisemakers that are permitted.
“It’s nice to see something like this bring everybody together,” said Crystal Hoagland, a student who was present at the match. Another student echoed Crystal’s sentiments, a rabid Spanish supporter named Jess Fainberg.
“I’m a big Spain fan,” said Fainberg, “So anytime I get to see them play I enjoy it.”
But even after the chaos of the semi-final round which saw the Netherlands defeat Uruguay on Tuesday 3 to 2, followed by Spain stunning the young and high-powered Germans this afternoon by the score of 1 to 0, the party wasn’t finished.
After the Germany-Spain contest, a drawing was held to award soccer-themed prizes, including a popular mini version of the Jabulani, the 2010 World Cup match ball. The festivities then shifted outside, where everybody in attendance took part in a huge pickup soccer game.
“I’d definitely like to see more Campus Life events around COCC,” said honorary ASCOCC member Carl Rockwell, “And things like this are a step in the right direction.”
