The annual Salmon Bake will be held at Central Oregon Community College’s Campus Center this year.
The salmon bake is an event that has been held at COCC—usually in the Mazama gym–for over a decade, according to Justine Connor, the event’s coordinator.
Salmon will be donated by the Warm Springs Natural Resources Department and will be prepared in the traditional style, over an alder pit, says Connor.
“It should be pretty amazing,” she says.
Other features of the Salmon Bake include cultural dance performances, Native American arts and crafts vendors, and presentations of three films.
“We’re planning on converting the Multicultural Center into a theater for the films,” says Connor.
The three films are Chinook History, The Spirit of Sacagawea, and River of Renewal, an award-winning documentary about the conflict over the Klamath Basin resources.
Cultural dances will be performed by the Wasco Dancers, the Madras High School Cultural Enrichment Club, Latino Folkloric Dancers, Aztec Dancers, and Warm Springs dancers.
“(The Wasco Dancers) range from two years to mid-teens in age … with parents helping out from Warm Springs,” says Frank Brunoe, a COCC student and Native American club member. “They are very committed to cultural enrichment.”
The event is free with a requested but not required donation of $5 per plate of food. It is open to the public and will be held April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
