The Broadside
Spanish film night offers an opportunity for students to improve their Spanish speaking skills and learn more about Latino culture. This Central Oregon Community College event is free and open to students and families in the community.
The film night was formed in the spring of 2011 by Latino Program Coordinator, Evelia Sandoval, and COCC’s foreign language department collaborator, Spanish Professor Joshua Evans. The purpose of the event is to give students and members of the community the chance to see Spanish films that they wouldn’t find anywhere else, as well as get younger children and families in the area involved in the college.
“Having a Spanish Film Night is a good opportunity to expose people to Latino culture while getting families exposed to the campus,” said Sandoval.
But you don’t have to speak Spanish or be Latino to participate. The film will be in Spanish but will feature English subtitles.
“We’re a community college, so our purpose is to not only help our students, but to also help our community” said Evans.
The next event will take place on Jan. 31 at 5:45 p.m. at the Boyle Education Center, room 155. The movie showing is “Under the Same Moon” (La Misma Luna) which tells the parallel stories of nine-year-old Carlitos and his mother, Rosario.
In the hopes of providing a better life for her son, Rosario works illegally in the U.S. while her mother cares for Carlitos back in Mexico. Unexpected circumstances drive both Rosario and Carlitos to embark on their own journeys in a desperate attempt to reunite. Along the way, mother and son face challenges and obstacles but never lose hope that they will one day be together again.
