In some college dorms, the presence of pets has become progressively more common. At Central Oregon Community College’s Wickiup Hall, residents have found creative ways to share dorm life with their furry or scaly companions. From dark hiding spaces under beds to fish tanks perched on mini fridges and desks, these pets are getting the full college experience, while simultaneously offering emotional support and reducing the common stress and anxiety brought about by college life.
At Wickiup Hall, it appeared that there was an abundance of students who had fish as pets. One student, Madeline Bell, had two goldfish, Bubba and Fin. Before moving to Wickiup, they were in two separate fish tanks but have now joined homes.
Similarly, Kammy Mahlum, Jenna Harrington, Zoe Griffin, and Molly Gibbons, a group of roommates, adopted a goldfish about a month ago and named him Quavo. Quavo lets his owners know when he is hungry by swimming around with his mouth open.
Additionally, there are a couple cats enjoying dorm life. Grace Buczynski’s cat Desmond is a domestic long haired cat that can sit on command, and Auggi, Lidya Harms’ cat is a Norwegian long haired cat who loves making biscuits.
