Native American Salmon Bake

A Native American salmon bake is slated for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, in the Campus Center on the Central Oregon Community College Bend campus.

The purpose of the event is to give local Native peoples an opportunity to share aspects of their cultural heritage with others. The event is free, and the public is welcome.

This year’s event will feature salmon cooked in traditional style over an alder fire pit, green salad, beans and traditional fry bread.

The event will offer cultural dance performances throughout the day, including Native American flute music by KONA Foster Kalama, the Madras High School Cultural Enrichment Club, Aztec Dancers and the Warm Springs dancers. Locally made Native American arts and crafts will be for sale.

Author Reyna Grande to speak in Bend and Redmond

Reyna Grande, author of “Across a Hundred Mountains,” will be speaking in Bend and Redmond on Wednesday, May 26. She will be speaking at 3:30 p.m. in Wille Hall in the Campus Center on the Central Oregon Community College Bend campus and at 6 p.m. in the Redmond High School Auditorium.
Grande is the author of the critically acclaimed novel “Across a Hundred Mountains” (Atria 2006), for which she received an American Book Award (2007) and El Premio Aztlan Literary Award (2006).

Her newest novel, “Dancing with Butterflies,” about a friendship among four women in Los Angeles, was published in October 2009.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and film and video from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a master’s of fine arts in creative writing from Antioch University.

Born in Mexico, Grande was raised by her grandparents after her parents left to work in the U.S. She immigrated at the age of nine as an undocumented immigrant and went on to become the first person in her family to earn a college degree.
