The Latino Club at Central Oregon Community College is turning this year’s Cinco de Mayo celebration into a community wide event. The festivities will occupy a majority of the Campus Center building and is designed to entertain people from all over Central Oregon, whether they are students at COCC or not.

“Students wanted to do a . . . community service,” said Evelia Sandoval, the Latino Program Coordinator.

According to Sandoval, the Latino Club decided this year’s event would not be designed just for students here at COCC. The event will be quite a bit larger than what they have done in the past. Not only will the family friendly celebration offer a variety of activities and games that cater to people of all ages, various organizations like the Latino Community Association and Neighborhood Impact will be there to extend their services to the community.

Cinco de Mayo is an annual Mexican holiday that celebrates the Battle of Puebla. The battle was fought during the French occupation of Mexico and was one of few victories celebrated by the Mexican army. Even though the victory occurred nearly 250 years ago, it is still celebrated in Mexican culture today.

The COCC event will offer traditional Mexican food such as tamales from various restaurants around Central Oregon, traditional folklore dancing and music.

Arts and crafts will be offered for younger attendees, as well as games like Loteria (Mexican Bingo) and Mexican dominoes.

The band Privilegio Norteno will play traditional Mexican music and will be followed by a DJ and an open dance floor that will occupy the cafeteria space of the Campus Center.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. and last until 11:30 p.m., allowing adults in attendance to really party down on the dance floor.
