Student government crafts new media policy
Student government members read a new media policy for their bylaws into their minutes during a Feb. 4 meeting.
“All requests for interviews, ASCOCC [Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College] documents, FOI [Freedom of Information] requests, and contact both formal and informal will be directed to the ASCOCC Marketing and Advertising Coordinator,” according to the new policy.
ASCOCC’s marketing and advertising coordinator is Brenda Pierce. All media requests are to go through Pierce who will schedule interviews, provide information to media outlets and review FOI requests. FOI requests deal normally with public entities on the federal level. Other government agencies are required to follow Public Records and Public Meetings laws.
ASCOCC’s policy also outlined their advisor’s role.
“The advisor’s role is not to release ASCOCC documents or provide information that pertains to ASCOCC,” according to the policy. Requests for information that require the advisor to “generate reports or documents will be reviewed by ASCOCC Council for accuracy and provided to appropriate parties by ASCOCC.”
The advisor “will not speak to the media on behalf of ASCOCC,” according to the policy.
The policy also included a segment related to The Broadside stating that members will interview with the student newspaper “only in the presence of the Marketing and Advertising Coordinator.”
Small Business Development
COCC’s Small Business Development Center has hired Jose Balcazar as a small business adviser for the Latino community. This position has been funded by a grant. The Oregon Community Foundation donated $10,000 to establish Navegante de Negocios (Latino Business Navigator) to provide economic, leadership and civic engagement opportunities for the Latino community in Central Oregon (http://www.oregoncf.org).
“Being able to locate, organize and utilize resources is what Central Oregon Latinos need to start a new business or grow their present businesses,” said Balcazar, according to the Central Oregon Community College website.
