The Associated Students of Cascades Campus and the Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College will be presenting their second annual “Jam on the Hill” rail jam.

The rail jam is a competition for skiers and snowboarders who perform tricks on long slide rails tothe sounds of hip-hop. It has become popular on college campuses all over the United States. The event also has regional and national competitions.

A panel of skiing and snowboarding experts judge the event. The scoring is based on a combination of technical skills with the most unique style, as riders take advantage of all the features of the rails.

“We are excited to work together with ASCC on this event, which will hopefully continue for years to come,” said Brenda Pierce, the ASCOCC’s marketing and advertising coordinator.

The event, sponsored by Mount Bachelor, Black-Strap and Skullcandy, is a qualifier for the Bend Winterfest Rail Jam, brought to Central Oregon by U.S Cellular.

“It’s a great opportunity for local riders to showcase their talents and become more recognized in the field of pro-am (professional–amateur) snowboarding” said Jeff Blaylock, the ASCC’s activities director. Blaylock rode in the  competition last year and plans to ride again this year.

“A lot of the riders are pro-am looking to get into the next level of snowboarding,” said Blaylock. Riders can register online at http://www.wix.com/jamonthehill/2011/. There is a $25 registration fee, which is included in the winner’s cash prize. Winners also qualify to compete at the Cricket Campus rail jam tours final event.

There will be food and beverage vendors at the event including Dutch Bros. coffee. Jam on the Hill will take place on Jan. 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the newly expanded Barber Library parking lot.
