A proposal for a new amendment was announced last Wednesday by the Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College during a meeting attended by club and program members.

If the amendment passes, it will allocate direct funding to The Broadside and Club Sports from an increase in student fees. The increase will be 25¢ per club.

“The amendment will help generate independent funds for The Broadside and … Club Sports,” said Brenda Pierce, ASCOCC’s marketing coordinator.

ASCOCC and The Broadside came up with an alternative form of funding based on feedback from students, clubs and programs following an ASCOCC Council meeting held on April 29.

During the April meeting, an amendment was proposed by The Broadside and was met with negative reactions from club and program members.
Club and program members considered the recent meeting an improvement on the April meeting.

“I though it went a lot more smoother than last meeting,” said David Young, a member of the Military Science program. “I’m glad that it happened.”

Gordon Price, the Director of Student Life, thought the clubs’ agreement on the new amendment was a “breakthrough in communication,” which he was excited to see.
In the original proposed amendment, 40¢ of the $1.50 student fee per credit hour would be allotted to The Broadside, leaving the remaining $1.10 of the fee to be disbursed among the other clubs and programs.

Following this proposal, Club Sports requested a budget increase as well, during an ASCOCC meeting.

Both clubs rescinded their proposals after the new amendment was announced.
“It’s (the new proposed amendment) a better way to get the money needed,” said Chris March, a member of the Criminal Justice program. “I support it, I really hope it will get the votes.”

Pierce regarded the amendment as a “great compromise” for The Broadside and Club Sports, adding that it will also guarantee an additional $1,000 in every club and programs’ budget.

The increase in student fees should help generate an estimated $46,000 for The Broadside and Club Sports each, per year. It will put a minimum of $52,000 back into ASCOCC’s general funds for clubs, programs and events.

The amendment will be voted on May 24 through May 27 on Blackboard.
