It was recently announced by Disney that a new “Star Wars” trilogy will be created and produced by Daniel Brett Weiss and David Benioff, the producers of the HBO series “Game of Thrones.”
A confirmation of what the trilogy will be about has not been released yet, but Weiss and Benioff are honored by the opportunity according to a statement given to the Washington Post. “[They are] little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete.”
A new trilogy in the mix can appeal to both “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones” fans. Jake Agatucci, Central Oregon Community College associate professor of English mentioned that he is excited for the new trilogy. “I respect what they did with [George R. R.] Martin’s story, taking it and tweaking and adjusting within the framework of the world and it’s characters.”
Agatucci teaches Intro into Film, Writing 121 and 122, Combat Narratives, and a Digital Games Culture class at Central Oregon Community College.
Several students have also expressed interest in the announcement by Disney. “I think Weiss and Benioff are the perfect writers to take the “Star Wars” series in a brand new direction,” said Brandon Granger, current film student at COCC looking to transfer to Portland State University to study film.
However, with all the anticipation for a new addition to the saga, a fair share of criticism for the result, as well as Disney’s involvement, has been put forth. “Disney is a family company so they could be sketchy with the producers of “Game of Thrones” and their involvement with HBO. It could either be awesome or just end up going horribly wrong,” student Brandon Baltzell said.
Influences aside, time will tell whether or not this new trilogy will be a hit for previous “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones” fans. ■
