More than two decades after Ridley Scott’s Gladiator delivered some of the most iconic cinematic lines and battle scenes depicting the thrills of the legendary Roman Colosseum on the big screen, its much-anticipated sequel delivers a film that pays homage to the original in ways fans of the classic film will love, while also branching out into new storylines to keep fans entertained through its 2 hours and 28 minutes of runtime.
Set around 16 years after the events of Gladiator and the death of Maximus played by Russell Crowe, the film follows Lucius, portrayed by Paul Mescal. Who is captured after an invasion by the Roman armies led by Pedro Pascal’s character, General Marcus Acacius. Lucius is forced to become a gladiator owned by Denzel Washington’s character, Marcinus, an arms dealer who wants to manipulate the Roman senate for power. Lucius is compelled to confront the empire’s corruption and his own heritage. His journey is similar to the path of Maximus, as he seeks justice and aims to restore Rome’s former glory.
Mescal leads the film as the main protagonist, Lucius. Mescal has garnered many critiques for his portrayal in the film but overall Mescal captured the tone set from the first movie and paved his own legacy with a respectful sequel to Gladiator.
Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal help add talent to the story as supporting characters, while Connie Nielsen reprised her role as Lucilla Aurelius from the first film and well placed dialogue pay homage to the original film without feeling redundant.
Ridley Scott’s direction remains commanding, balancing large-scale action with deep personal moments. The Colosseum battles are intense and meticulously choreographed, even going over the top with a beautiful naval battle featuring sharks.
