With so many businesses around the country and Central Oregon closing up shop because of the recession, it is always reassuring to hear about a new business entering the marketplace. And Tula Bakery, located on Bend’s south side on Weatherford street, is not only a new business but one that is entering the Central Oregon marketplace with a product that is hard to find here, 100% gluten free products.

“I got the idea when after traveling to other cities and seeing gluten free bakeries. I then thought that Bend didn’t have any bakery that was completely gluten free and saw a great opportunity,” said owner Mieke Johnson.

Gluten is a protein that is found in many of the grains commonly used in baking, such as wheat, barley, oats and rye.  Many people discover they suffer from gluten intolerance or an inability to digest gluten properly, and find that they benefit from a gluten free diet.

“Gluten free products are ones that are baked without any grains containing gluten. And our bakery is completely gluten free,” said Johnson.

Tula Bakery is a wholesale bakery that is selling to a variety of local businesses, such as Bom Dia, Jackson’s Corner, Lone Pine Coffee Roasters and Blenderz. Their products include bread, scones, cupcakes, brownies, tarts and savory and sweet quick breads.

Johnson started the business in March with her husband Caleb and currently they employ only one other employee.

“We have a few we are waiting to hire in summer, once we start selling at the farmer’s market at Northwest Crossing,” Johnson explained.
