This fall Central Oregon Community College will be continuing the annual five on five basketball leagues. Games started Monday Oct. 4 and continues Wednesday at 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the gym of the Mazama building.

Originally, the leagues only consisted of 8 teams fighting for playoff positions each but this year the turnout was more than the Director of Club Sports and Intramurals Bill Douglass anticipated.

“We may have to add two more teams to each league because of the large turnout,” he said.
So this year 20 teams instead of only 16 may be battling it out to earn a COCC basketball championship.

There are two divisions in the league; Monday and Wednesday night teams are separated. A team is allowed to sign up for both leagues. Four of the 10 teams per division will earn playoff positions and get the opportunity at the championship and the prize that comes with it. The prizes for the tournament are still uncertain but Douglass assures that the prize will be worth the hard work teams put forward.

Students who don’t have Monday and Wednesday evening classes are encouraged to come see the games. Even those with evening classes could catch a few of the games before or after their classes.

In the past couple years the basketball league keeps gaining momentum and fans create a big audience for the players adding to the competitive environment says Josh Snider, a 25 year-old transferring senior who competed last year.

“It gets pretty competitive. I like the camaraderie that builds within the team. You meet a lot of outstanding people that like the same thing. It’s really a great program and a lot of fun,” said Snider.

Both the new Club Sports Intramural Activities Coordinator Matt Greenleaf and Douglass will be overseeing the basketball league. Both seem to be working hard and multitasking several other leagues including the five on five flag football team.

“I really think these five on five leagues are good for the new fall students. We hope a number of the teams participating are newer students getting to know other students and getting involved in extracurricular activities,” said Douglass,

“It’s a great way to get some extra exercise if your not in an athletic class or even if you are,” he said.

Those not in the league are encouraged to stop by as a spectator to support students as they battle it out for the championship.
