Rise and Grind: Military Science 180

MS 180 students begin class with calisthenics and dynamic stretches on the COCC track on Nov. 23.

Need a reason to drag yourself out of bed in the morning? Can’t find time in your day to get some exercise in? Military Science 180 might be the answer you’re looking for.

Military Science 180 meets every term on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. at the Central Oregon Community College track.

While students in the course are primarily ROTC cadets or military service members, the class is open to civilians.

Workouts begin with a full body warm-up comprised primarily of body-weight exercises and dynamic stretches. The main part of the class is comprised of  cardiovascular activities and more body-weight exercises which may include push-ups, sit-ups and squats. The cardiovascular portion might include running to Grandview, a fun run, a track workout, and occasionally ultimate frisbee. Students then gather back together to complete a series of static stretches and debrief.

The instructor demands discipline and respect, but this only contributes to the positive atmosphere of the class. Students seem to share in an easy camaraderie built on cold early mornings, and grueling workouts together.
