There is no doubt that the changes in students’ lives due to COVID-19 have been an adjustment some may be struggling through. With many students returning home during this time and participating in online courses, some may be missing the supportive community that is available on campus for those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Due to the COCC campuses being closed, many clubs will unfortunately not be able to meet this term including the LGBTQ+ and Allies club. For students who have moved back home and may be living with people who do not accept their identities, information and support are important. Luckily, there are a multitude of resources available.

Self-quarantining or self-isolation can make keeping up with hobbies or contact with friends more difficult. These challenges may also be relevant to those in the LGBTQ+ community who may be unable to express themselves in their home life. One resource is Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG. This organization has been working towards educating the public and supporting those who may need it. PFLAG has multiple discussion boards available to all, as well as an email address provided where questions can be asked and answered in a more private setting.

“PFLAG provides opportunities for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.”
