Deschutes County Solid Waste Management has proposed thirteen new landfill sites to be built by 2029, six of which are in close proximity to the Pine Mountain Observatory. This observatory has been a part of the community since 1967 and continues to be open to the public as a place where people observe stars, galaxies, planets and more. If one of these six landfill sites is constructed, virtually all scientific and educational operations at Pine Mountain Observatory will be irreparably harmed due to increased traffic and light pollution.
