OSU-Cascades hopes to attract international students with new expansion

If you enroll at Oregon State University-Cascades in 2015, your dorm-mate could very possibly be from outside the U.S. International students, who only make up four percent of the student body now, could be a large part of the Oregon State University-Cascades campus expansion. OSU-Cascades is currently looking into forming a partnership with INTO University Partnerships Limited, an international organization that has already recruited 1,424 students for OSU in Corvallis.

“The top five nationalities currently represented in Corvallis are China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan and Oman,” McGowan said. The INTO program is already in its fifth year on the Corvallis campus.

OSU-Cascades and INTO have yet to finalize a partnership, Amy McGowan, INTO OSU coordinator.

“Negotiations for a contract between INTO University Partnerships and OSU-Cascades are currently underway and cannot be commented on yet,” McGowan said. “

In Corvallis, students in INTO spend a year in the “pathway” program, according to Amy McGowan, the INTO OSU center director. This program helps ease international students into the cultural norms of American classrooms.

“The Pathway Programs are part of the contract discussions between INTO and OSU-Cascades,” McGowan said.

Upon completion of the pathway program, students can enroll at OSU in a four-year degree program as second year students. OSU is also working to offer an international program for business graduate students in Oregon.
