Travis Peden steps down

The Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College accepted the resignation of former community and college relations coordinator, Travis Peden, on Jan. 5, 2010.

“My official reason for resigning is having a strong moral conflict with the actions and choices of certain members of this council,” wrote Peden in an email.

No further details were released. Pursuant to article IV, section 6 in the ASCOCC constitution, the student government is advertising the open position “for a minimum of one week and [the position] will be filled within thirty (30) days.”

Shawna Elsberry Hired As Director Of Retention

After doing a nation-wide search, Central Oregon Community College has decided to hire current CAP (Career services – Academic advising – Personal counseling) center advisor, Shawna Elsberry, as the school’s new director of retention, a new position for the college. Some of Elsberry’s responsibilities will include coordinating campus-wide student retention, researching and recommending an early alert system and other work related to student retention and success, according to an email from Alicia Moore.
At any college, the general job description for the director of retention is to encourage students to stay enrolled at the college. This can include tasks such as advising how to improve academic programs, helping to make features on campus more convenient and communicating with students to gain their views on what changes need to be implemented.
Elsberry is also still working in her former position.

College hosts ground breaking ceremony

Central Oregon Community College is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the Health Careers Building.
The building will include five universal classrooms and several laboratories for nursing, pharmacy technician, medical assisting, dental assisting and licensed massage therapy.
The winning bid was $10.54 million by the Howed S. Wright builders of Bend.
The construction and decorating is scheduled is to be finished in the spring of 2012.
The funding for this large project is primarily coming from a COCC bond measure from 2009. The amount from the bond is $18 million. The 2007 Oregon Legislature allocated $5.7 towards the facility.
After the ceremony there will be a short tour of Mazama’s new classrooms and mathematics laboratories.
