In between tackling the student orientation events last week and attending a student government conference in St. Louis, Missouri this week, the Associated Students of Cascades Campus are looking forward to what they can accomplish this school year.

“Our number one goal is to make the student lounge a quiet study area,” said ASCC Activities Coordinator Taylor Bacci. “Another goal is to look into getting some Cascades apparel.”

Currently, the campus bookstore is selling only Central Oregon Community College apparel, something this year’s student government members would like to change.

“We’d like to have [the apparel] available for the Cascades students,” said ASCC President Caroline Ervin.

All six members are new to the Oregon State University-Cascades student government this year, having been selected through a hiring and appointing process, an election process chosen due to the number of students and size of the campus.

The conference they are visiting this week is the 33rd Annual National Leadership Conference on Student Government, where they will be participating in three and a half full day conferences, according to Bacci.

ASCC’s other plans include lowering online tuition rates and promoting volunteering on campus. In addition to these, they are also faced with an important concern this year.

“We’re dealing with transitioning from a dual campus to a single campus,” said Ervin. “We’ll be working on fostering a sense of community between OSU-Cascades and [University of Oregon] students for their final year.”

Although U of O previously offered four undergraduate degrees at the college, administration decided to switch to a one-program institution to provide better service to students. The transition will be especially difficult during this final year, according to ASCC Program Coordinator Stacie Pradmore, who is also a U of O student at OSU-Cascades.

“I feel like it is an issue,” said Pradmore. “But I want to say [to U of O students] at the end of the year we’re still graduating, so hang in there.”

ASCC will be back on campus Oct. 3. Weekly student government meetings are held every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Cascades Hall  room 103.
