“[NaNoWriMo] is an opportunity to be in this together,” Eileen Sather, faculty member of the English and Literature department, said.

November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. People use NaNoWriMo as an opportunity to jumpstart their writing by attempting to write 50,000 words in one month towards the completion of a novel.

COCC is using NaNoWriMo as part of an effort to establish a larger presence for creative writing at the college. More creative writing events will occur in winter and spring term. Sather wants to help promote creative writing at COCC at any stage, so writers of all levels are welcome.

Students, faculty, and staff can participate in NaNoWriMo at COCC by joining a few Zoom meetings throughout the month. At each meeting, participants will discuss the writing process and then spend the majority of the meeting writing.

People do not have to commit to writing a novel to participate in NaNoWriMo. Sather explained that at its core, NaNoWriMo is a chance for writers to get together and write. By participating, people have the opportunity to meet other creative writers and develop a community.

Anyone who wants to join this challenge will not have to write 50,000 words or a novel. All that is required to participate is a desire to write.

“It’s just an inspiration,” Sather said. Sather will use NaNoWriMo as an opportunity to recommit to a consistent writing practice.

The next meeting is Thursday, November 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. over Zoom at this link. The final meeting will be Tuesday, November 30 at the same time. Join it with the same Zoom link.
