Mazama editions get seal of approval

President of COCC Jim Middleton gives a speech during a tour of the New Mazama Extension. The extension added new class rooms, as well as a S.M.A.R.T Lab, which provides a new way for students to learn math.

With the beginning of winter term there are a few new additions to the Mazama building, including brand new class rooms and the ever so technical Students Mastering Algebra through Revolutionary Techniques Lab also known as the S.M.A.R.T lab. The layout of the new section is very open and the comfy chairs in the halls are a nice touch.

Student Natalie Wright said “The classroom is comfortable and can fit many more students.” One thing though, the upper floor restrooms are not big enough to accommodate that many more students.” The class rooms have very nice adjustable ergonomic chairs and light weight movable tables. The chairs are a nice change from some of the elementary
style school desks some of the classrooms have, especially if your larger than the average 12yr old. The tables are convenient for those teachers who like to do group projects. We’ll have to wait and see if they stand up to the wear and tear test.

When talking about the S.M.A.R.T lab, Math 60 Student Cameron Wright said “It’s a comfortable work area. At times it gets too noisy.” The S.M.A.R.T lab is designed to allow students enrolled in the newly modified math classes to do their homework and get the state required seat time for a non Internet class.Essentially it is a computer lab with the      Hawkes Learning software easy to reach on each Computer but if your in one of these new classes be sure to sign in so you get credit for being there.

Overall I’d say the new addition is a comfortable and open learning environment and I hope it spreads to the rest of the
classrooms.
