Some members of the campus community will be celebrating Earth Day by making a difference on campus. The Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College, the Sustainability Club, the Garden Club and the Volunteer club have come together to organize a campus clean up.
The event was organized by ASCOCC Outreach Coordinator, Brandi Jordan.
“I want to keep the campus looking nice,” said Jordan. “It’s the center of our school community, so it’s important to take care of it.”
The three clubs signed on because they too wanted to make a difference on campus.
“We just want to make the place we study and spend most of our time a better place,” said Stephen Lothrop, the president of the sustainability club.
The Garden Club had been planning on organizing a similar event, according to club president Lisa Barnett, so they were pleased when they heard one was already being planned.
“We thought why not just do it together,” said Barnett.
The participants will start the clean up at the quad, according to Jordan, and work their way all the way to the disc golf course. The goal is to remove as much trash from the campus as possible, and get it to stay clean beyond Earth Day.
Any student interested in participating in the Earth Day clean up is welcome to attend. The group will be meeting in the student government office in the campus center at 11 am on April 22, and the clean up will last until two. Afterwards, there will be pizza and refreshments provided by the ASCOCC.
This will be the first time this clean up event has taken place on campus, but Barnett said she hopes that it will become an annual event that many others will come to participate in. She thought that it would be a good way for different clubs and individual students to come together and get to know each other, as well as a positive service to the campus.
“We spend a lot of time on campus,” said Barnett. “ so we might as well keep it clean.”
