As school comes closer to an end, Central Oregon Community College provides a variety of races and events for students to enjoy before they head out for the summer. The 19th annual Jungle run is a free race that included a course that is like no other.

The two courses run loops around the lower campus. They include a variety of obstacles for students to jump over and around and large mud pits throughout. Bill Douglass, race coordinator, explained that a previous instructor came up with the course.

“I actually think there used to be more obstacles and mud pits.  But we added the snakes.”

Bill is referring to three rubber snakes that were hidden on the course.  If a snake was found, it could be exchanged for a prize.

Student Jeffrey Keil participated in the race to make up for missing total fit classes. “I [was] looking forward to getting sprayed in the hose section and doing push ups in the mud pit,” Keil said.

Luis Navez, student affairs coordinator,  went to the race just for fun.

“I’m not too competitive, I just want to have fun and this seems like a good fit. I am looking forward to getting tired and the classic runner’s high feeling,” Navez said.

The race was split into two distances: a two mile and four mile race. The winner for the Male’s two mile race, with a time of 13:01 was Rogan Prescott, a first year student at Central Oregon Community College.

“The race was fun, and I loved the mud, it was the best part,” Prescott said.

The winner for the female’s two mile race was first year student Mara Marshall with a time of 14:40.

The winner for the male’s four mile was Camden Hammer, a varsity athlete at Summit High School with a time of 24:54, and Grace Perkins was the female winner with 28:56 from Bend Senior High School. Perkins liked the mud pits and the first hill along the course.

The next COCC race is Storm the Stairs on June 8th at 5:30pm. “There will be food from Long Board Louie’s and prizes, and the best part is that it is all free.” said Douglass.
