The 2011 May Race series continues right along into what many Central Oregon Community College students consider to be the most physically taxing of all three races, as the Jungle Run comes May 12.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. on the COCC track, the Jungle Run/Walk offers all competitors either a four mile trail run or a two mile trail hike through
course devised by former Health and Human Performance instructor Doug Booster.

Intramural Sports director Bill Douglass said, “It’s entirely on the COCC trail … When Doug (Booster) left us, the intramural department continued the race.”

According to the Intramural Sports webpage, the racecourse features such obstacles as single track trails, mud bogs provided by helpful Intramural Sports aides armed with water hoses, several steep ascents and descents and numerous log crossings.

“It’ll help me become a more well-rounded athlete,” said Jared Uselman, who helped run the Jungle Run during last year’s competition and who will be taking part in the race this year. “Compared to other races where you’re just running on a flat surface, it’s much more diverse.”

Uselman is the president of the Fitness Club at COCC and believes that by participating, he would serve as a good model for other members of the club and any student who is interested in fitness and their health.

“I think with being the president and being sort of a social figure around the fitness club, me running in the Jungle Run would set a good example to all the students,” said Uselman.

He also has this piece of advice for the other competitors: bring a good pair of shoes, but a pair you don’t mind getting dirty.
As it is with every race in this Series, COCC/Oregon State University students and staff can participate for free. There is a $5 fee for community members outside the college.

If you wish to participate in the Jungle Run, return a completed registration form to the Sports and Recreation Office located in the lower level of Mazama Hall, office 111.
