Free tutoring takes students to the next level

You’ve been up for 24 straight hours, scratching out a thesis, working through calculus and staring at a graph of the Kreb’s cycle. You’re at your wit’s end. If only there was some kind of abundant, free help on campus.

You’ve been up for 24 straight hours, scratching out a thesis, working through calculus and staring at a graph of the Kreb’s cycle. You’re at your wit’s end. If only there was some kind of abundant, free help on campus.
You’re in luck. Free and abundant help is offered at the Tutoring and Testing Center on the bottom floor of the Central Oregon Community College library and it’s staffed with people ready to help you succeed in your classes whether you are enrolled in developmental math and writing, biology, chemistry, writing or many others subjects.
Whether a student is perplexed over fractions or needs help organizing their thoughts on paper, tutors are available. You can find someone that can cater to your needs, like helping you through statistics.
“Even though there weren’t many statistics tutors, they were very helpful,” said Brittyn Faulkner, a COCC student.
While geology, automotive and aviation tutoring require appointments, most of the tutors are available on a drop-in basis.
“We find that drop in tutoring works best with student and tutor scheduling,” said Kellie Smith, director of tutoring.

There are tin cans at the entance of the tutoring center, located downstairs in the library, for student to take to their table. When ready for help, they flip the can so red is on top. Erica Rodriguez gets some math help from tutor Ron Tucker (Catherine Cuthburt | The Broadside).

In addition to tutoring for developmental classes such as math and writing, there are many other subjects that offer tutors as well. Students having a hard time with the complexities of excel can seek out computer science tutors to get the help they need.
“The tutoring center offers a safe haven for students who feel intimidated,” said Leslie Lim, writing center director and coordinator.
The Writing Center, which is located in the Tutoring Annex on the first floor of the Barber Library, has a plethora of resources available to students, including handouts, a website and even a blog that Lim created with extra resources. They have seen an increase in students using the writing labs services. Some students even come in just for the peace and quiet, according to Lim.
“A huge part of student success is using the resources available,” said Lim.
Information on tutoring times and locations can be found in the tutoring center, located in the lower level of the library, at the Tutor Annex which is located on the first level of the library, or on the tutoring website, http://tutortest.cocc.edu/.
