Find a job on campus

Making the jaunt up the hill to Central Oregon Community College’s campus to attend classes can be tiring and time consuming. It might even leave you with an empty feeling in your wallet when it comes time to fill up the tank. Factor in the other places that the typical college student may need to drive, and the situation isn’t looking much prettier.

According to Tracey Dula from careers, advising and personal counseling, to saving time and gas are reasons why students in need of a job might look to on- campus employment rather than working at a different location.

Though she doesn’t handle campus jobs specifically, it’s part of Dula’s job to help students look for employment–she said that the best thing students can do for themselves is to keep their options open and look for listings everywhere on and off campus.

“It’s about having a very proactive approach,” said Dula.

One way to get on campus employment is through work study, which is a part of financial aid. Students who are awarded work study are given a job on campus, which works around their class schedules. Outside of financial aid, there are other ways to get on campus jobs, by applying for other services on campus, such as coffee shops and student publications like The Broadside.

Incoming student, Scott Burch, said that he would be interested in a job on campus for the sake of getting to know the campus and people on it.

“You’d get to meet new people you wouldn’t have gotten to meet before,” said Burch.

Burch hopes an on-campus job would help him find his niche in campus life, though he wishes that finding job listings at COCC was an easier process, because he was unable to find any postings at the campus.

Students interested in working on campus can visit the COCC student jobs section of the website, or approach the area they’re interested in working for to ask for an application.

More information about work study can be acquired through the financial aid office.
