Tyler Hayes is not a ne face to Central Oregon Community College, but he is new to the Student Life Department. Taking over for Taran Smith, Hayes is the new coordinator of student engagement at COCC.

Hayes made the switch in September, and he enjoys his new position.

“Personally, this was a good move for myself. I get to work with student government and closer with students,” Hayes said, “It was a new opportunity I was ready to take on.”

“Personally, this was a good move for myself. I get to work with student government and closer with students … It was a new opportunity I was ready to take on,” Hayes said.

Though Hayes had previously worked with students, he worked with them only when they had an issue with financial aid. In this new position, he is continually working with students in a different capacity.

“I used to just work with students and then they move on. Here, I see the same group of kids over and over … I get to learn to serve this campus in a new way,” Hayes said.

Acting as the advisor for ASCOCC and creating engagement on campus with Student Life will be his primary responsibilities as coordinator of student engagement. These duties entail resolving student issues and putting on events such as Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week and Bowling Night.

After receiving his associate degree from North Idaho Community College, Hayes went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from San Diego Christian College. Hayes received his master’s degree in academic advising from Kansas State University.

“I always had a desire for higher education,” Hayes said.
