The Quad at Central Oregon Community College on April 22nd was a colorful, joyful place, celebrating the Earth.

Sponsored by the Associated Students of COCC, live music and free food drew students in to the festivities, while a sidewalk chalk drawing competition convinced them to stay.

Leif James played his original compositions in the corner nearest to Jefferson, while the sidewalk chalk art was located in the circular tiled area up the stairs, with booths and the burrito buffet in between.

After the three rounds of the sidewalk chalk competition, the Quad was filled with the vivid drawings.

“This has been a thing that ASCOCC does every year… (an)Earth day chalk competition,” said Carl Rockwell, who was stationed at the chalk competition booth. Prizes included seeds and wildflowers.

OSU-Cascades Students for Sustainable Resources Club had a booth set up as well, and talked to passersby about their mission.

“We’re trying to get some members to do ecological restoration,” said Jesse Scott, who manned the booth. “Spread the word about sustainability.”

Other events to observe Earth day included Bike to School week, sponsored by ASCOCC.
