COCC screens ‘Freedom Riders’

Stanley Nelson directs “Freedom Riders,” a 2011 documentary about the 13 civil rights activists who tested the anti-segregation laws on the interstate bus systems and in the waiting rooms in the early ‘60s in the deep south. The Freedom Riders—eventually numbering in the hundreds—challenged  local Jim Crow laws and customs non-violently, but many were harassed, beaten by mobs, arrested and imprisoned.
The film features testimonials from the Freedom Riders, journalists, witnesses and state and federal government officials. The film offers insight into the historical background of the Freedom Rides, the events that took place and changes in the United States that occurred as a result.
