Brayan’s How To Guide For Everything: Awkward

Brayan's how to guide

Since the New Year, we’ve been talking about first’s.  The first time one sets foot in the gym to begin our resolution, the first time one orders a salad instead or puts down the cigarette.

Life is full of first times.  But there always those first times that are embedded in our memory.  For this weeks column, lets take a stroll down memory lane and talk about out first time.  No, not that first time…but the first date.

Yes, we all know that first dates, no matter if you’re 15, 25, or 30 can be painfully awkward.  When it comes to us guys we stress about where to go, what to expect, and even about our clothes and hair (even if most won’t admit it). And don’t even get me started on our female counterparts because if we have it tough, for them it must be like Mission Impossible 4 or Defcon 5.

Overall, if the date we have is with someone who we truly have feelings for, as humans, we tend to build up the evening and expect things that only happen on Lifetime or in a Katherine Heigl movie.

If you want to make a good first impression without making a fool of yourself and at the same time reduce the painful awkwardness that claims many first dates follow the five simple rules below and you and your date will be golden!

  1. If you stress you’ll over dress: When it comes to attire, don’t let it blow your mind. Go for something that is formal but yet causal.  A nice button down, good jeans, and dress shoes should do the job.  Stay away from sandals, Hawaiian print, or anything that has to do with superheroes or kittens.
  2. Less is always more: A big mistake that a lot of guys do (myself included) is that they go for obvious choices to go, for example, the movies. Thats a big NO! especially for a first date. You want to get to know the other person and see if you have things in common. A crowded movie theater is so not the place for that to happen.
  3. Have some class:  Going to dinner is a go-to choice that is completely fool proof.  However, there are times where his can go horribly wrong. When it comes to choosing a place for dinner here are two places that you want to stay completely away from: Italian restaurants and Seafood. There is nothing sexy about slurping noodles or a pasta stay on your shirt, and, lets face it, if you have seafood noone is gonna want to kiss someone with fish-breath.
  4. Prep work from the get-go:  There is nothing wrong with having so pre-formulated questions to use as pointers just in case. However it is wrong to write them down and pull out the sheet of paper in the middle of dinner.  The other person wants to feel like shes on a date, not on a job interview. Dont go for the obvious questions like: what do you do? (if you met her in school, chances are her response will be ‘i’m a college student’) ask her things like: Do you have any pets?
  5. Don’t expect anything:  At the end of the day, if you really like the person you won’t expect anything in return (although a second date would be nice).  Just remember that first dates are mainly to get to the other person and explore the possibilities. Don’t go in expect to go straight to third base, after all, the best things in life are the ones worth waiting for.

Above all TREAT YO SELF!

Now, for the second entry in the series of the 10 commandments of Guy-code and the second in the series of Girl-code, The guide to today’s young people:

#2.  When questioned by a friend’s girlfriend of his whereabouts, you need not and should not provide any information. In deep interrogation, you are permitted to deny said friend’s very existence, even if own life is in peril. #GUYCODE

#2.  Never agree when a friend says she’s flabby, baggy, saggy, lumpy, floppy, veiny, squishy, scrawny, etc. etc.  Tell her to shut up.  Tell her life is too short and she should drink, eat, and sleep and be merry. #GIRLCODE
