After a slow start, Central Oregon Community College’s Black Student Union has set up regular meeting times and has elected members into official positions.

The club is still formulating ideas for what the overall mission will be.

“Collectively…we want to work as a group to achieve the goals of our vision,” said Vida Snyder, club president. “Whether you’re an officer or not you have a voice.”

The general mission of the BSU so far is to have a place for students to come together and share experiences and bring diversity to student life, according to Snyder.

Some of the already established goals of this club are to see a safe, supportive and positive environment for all members as well as a place to connect with others.

They are also planning events that will help showcase each other’s achievements.

“The BSU is a bridge for black students to come from not knowing each other to being together and feeling included,” said newly elected BSU Vice President Shahidah Nunez.

In the past the meetings have been inconsistent, but now the BSU is working to have more involvement and hopes to grow more, according to Snyder.

“We kind of got started last spring. We were hit and miss since then,” said Gordon Price, director of Student Life and advisor of the BSU.

The BSU is planning events for February’s Black History Month and hopes to get more students involved in the planning process.

Eventually they would like to host a poetry slam, where students can come in and read their poetry.

Meetings are set for Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. in the Multicultural meeting room in the top level of the Campus Center.

Students who are interested in joining the BSU are encouraged to come to meetings and get more involved.
