Alice in Wonderland: remake ‘differs slightly’

Lucinda Mann

The Broadside

Tim Burton and screenwriter Linda Woolverton put their own twist on Lewis Carroll’s classic story Alice In Wonderland.

The movie differs slightly from the book, Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) is depicted as a 19 year old girl. She attends a get together that turns out to be her engagement party. Although there are obligations for Alice to make certain decisions, she stays true to herself in the end.

Alice lives in a life of imagination, though her friends and family look down on her for this. When she finds herself in a place she calls Wonderland, a place she has visited many times before in her dreams, she discovers that Wonderland is a world where imagination is crucial in order to survive.

She meets The White Rabbit, a Smoking Caterpillar, The Dormouse, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), The White Queen (Anne Hathaway), and finally The Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter ).

Alice is faced with the idea that she will save the dwellers of this magical land from the demonic Jabberwocky. Alice begins her adventure denying that she is the “right” Alice. Throughout the movie the events she deals with help her realize that she is infact the Alice that the creatures have been talking about.

This 3D movie is action packed and rated PG for violent scenes and a smoking caterpillar, the run time is one hour and fifty minutes.
