Work at The Broadside

Do you have an interest in writing, editing, photography, social media, graphic design or other multimedia content creation? The Broadside offers paid positions to Central Oregon Community College students enrolled in at least six credits for the term in which they are working with The Broadside.

Each year, available positions include:

  • Editor-in-Chief
  • News/Opinion Editor
  • Engagement Editor
  • Reporter
  • Photographer
  • Copy Editor

Student editors are paid $550-650/month and student reporters and photographers are paid $300/month in exchange for creating two pieces of content per week. Copy editors are expected to be familiar with AP Style and are paid $10 per piece of content edited. Visit jobs.cocc.edu and search “broadside” to find the job application for the position you’re most interested in.

Students who work at The Broadside are required to enroll in the one-credit J-215 Publications Lab for each term they work for the news organization. Publications Lab takes place starting at 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays, with the weekly staff meeting taking place during this time.

Once enrolled in the lab, students should apply for the position they are most interested in. Experience in journalism is not required, but it is recommended that students enroll in J-216 or J-217 journalism courses when they are offered at COCC.

Paid freelance assignments are available for students interested in giving The Broadside a try. Students can pitch their own ideas or ask for an assignment from student editors. Freelance assignments pay $25-$30 each.
