A couple of Central Oregon Community College students came away with medals from the 12th annual Tour de Meissner on Feb. 12. Joe Madden and Darragh Hildreth, Nordic skiers at COCC, managed to come out on top in the men’s and women’s overall 15km skate race respectively. Joe and Darragh are just getting started though as a press release that was issued by the Bend Endurance Academy following the event highlighted their upcoming schedule.

In March, Darragh Hildreth will travel to Minneapolis, MN as part of the Pacific Northwest team at the 2011 Junior National Championships. Joe Madden will travel to Sun Valley, Idaho March 6-12 and represent COCC at the United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association National Championships.

The Nordic Ski Club at COCC has already supported 15 student athletes at practices and nationally sanctioned races. Through being partnered with the Bend Endurance Academy, who put on the Tour de Meissner, all COCC skiers have unlimited access to free coaching and transport, and have the option of appearing as a team to any fully supported race in the country. This year, most if not all of the Nordic ski races around Bend have featured at least one or two Bobcats.

Brenna Warburton, who will serve as head coach for both teams at the USCSA National Championships, of which Madden will be taking part while Hildreth is in Minnesota at the 2011 Junior National Championships, had this to say about the opportunity to work with a team that is attempting to restore the household name it held in Nordic skiing in years past, Nordic skiiers having captured many state and national championships for the campus over the decades.

“We appreciate the opportunity to work with COCC Nordic skiers,” said Warburton in the press release, “And are excited to support the new energy and excitement for competitive Nordic skiing at the collegiate level.”
