Sticky skin, sweat stains and scorching days? That means summer is approaching! Since it’s getting hotter each summer, heat relief is the ultimate priority. But turning on the air conditioning isn’t the only way to cool down. Here are eight ways to reduce the discomfort of the season’s unavoidable warmth.
1. Water Activities
Whether going to the beach or relaxing on a float at the lake, this is the most refreshing way to cool down on a scorching hot day. These enjoyable, nonchalant activities may double as an exciting trip out of town! Other ideas that don’t include traveling are water gun, balloon fights and swimming pools; the unforgettable classic summer activities. It gets your body moving and it’s better than being outdoors in the heat.
2. Staying Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water during warm days, especially when spending time outdoors or engaging in physical activities, is important too. Carrying and drinking from a reusable bottle throughout the day may prevent dehydration or heat-related illnesses. Other beverages like lemonade, sports drinks and iced tea can be great substitutes if you want something sweeter to quench your thirst but still stay hydrated.
Tip: Adding fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries to water can make it more appealing and refreshing.
3. Enjoy Frozen Sweet Treats
The summer heat is the most fitting time to eat all the cold and delectable treats you desire. The hot weather makes it particularly more tempting and appetizing for cooling off. Ice cream, popsicles, snow cones, and other treats provide a delightful, sweet escape that makes it a quintessential seasonal delicacy. If you’re looking for an indulgence but want a healthier alternative, fruit or frozen yogurt are better options.
4. Summer Clothing
Choosing the right clothing is your best bet to getting ultimate coolness in the summer heat. Loose-fitting, breathable fabric like cotton or linen and athletic wear help you stay comfortable while allowing your body to ventilate. Light-colored clothes will be better in hot weather as it reflects the sun’s rays rather than absorbing. Wide-brimmed hats also give you your own personal source of shade and protect your face from direct sun exposure. Chances are these types of apparel for summer might already be in your closet. Or visit COCC’s Clothing Connections for a large assortment of items for any type of weather. Students can take up to 10 free items each quarter.
5. Take Cold Showers or Baths
Dipping into a pool or lake is a summertime essential but taking a cool shower or bath is just as refreshing. If you’re struggling with the heat, just standing in the shower or lying in the bath for a minute or two will instantly feel restoring to your skin. For an extra boost of coolness use a mint soap to smell immensely crisp as well. In addition to improving your mood right away this will leave you smelling good all day.
6. Use Fans
A no-brainer and lifesaver especially when air conditioning is unavailable. You most likely have box or ceiling fans in your house, which are the most common types. Even portable hand-held fans can make a massive difference combating sweltering temperatures. Fans, regardless of type, circulate the air making the space feel substantially colder. By placing standalone fans next to open windows cooler air from outside can be drawn in.
Tip: Make a DIY air conditioner by placing a bag of ice or a wet sheet in front of a fan. Then enjoy the breeze!
7. Seek Shade or Indoor Spaces
Being out and about makes this the most evident but it’s also one of the simplest and most effective methods to remain cool. These areas are very practical if you don’t have a reliable home conditioning system as well. Shaded areas at parks, awnings and breezeways are excellent places to be outside in nature without feeling sweaty. Libraries and shopping centers also serve as places to cool off, providing comfort and spaces to recharge. These spots also allow you to remain active and involved but without risk of being unwell from the weather.
8. Cooling Accessories
From high-tech accessories to DIY solutions, cooling accessories are becoming must-have tools as temperatures rise. There’s an expanding selection of gear designed to help you maintain coolness when hiking, commuting or simply relaxing in the outdoors. Wearable coolers, misting fans, insulated water bottles, cooling towels, and more all offer instant alleviation from the heat.
