OSU-Cascades Faces Growing Parking Problems

OSU-Cascades+Faces+Growing+Parking+Problems

Oregon State University Cascades’ on Campus parking fees were waived Jan. 17-20 due to extreme weather and road conditions.

The three dollar daily parking fee has previously been an alleged source of complaint for OSU-Cascades students since the campus opened for fall term 2016.

While the parking fee would be hard to have ceased, students and staff with registered vehicles have been able able to park at a discounted price in specified parking lots on campus and for free in other specified lots on campus.

However, the fee issue is not the only parking issue OSU-Cascades is facing. According to Christine Coffin the director of communications and outreach for OSU-Cascades, businesses surrounding the OSU-Cascades campus have been quietly whispering back and forth regarding student use of private, customer only parking lots, as well as the overwhelming urge of students to park on roadways to avoid parking fees.

Coffin stated that, while there has been talk throughout the town of unhappy residents, there haven’t been many direct complaints to the University about their students parking habits, and many of the complaints made have been made by businesses, not residents and that the campus has virtually no impact on the surrounding residential areas.

OSU-Cascades has been taking steps to clear the air between their campus and the surrounding businesses, the step taken has been the signing of The University Community Partnership Agreement (UCPA). The agreement outlines the way that OSU-Cascades will work with community members in order to maintain peace between the University’s campus and the surrounding community. The UCPA will help to bridge the gap between the University’s staff and students and the community members surrounding the University by outlining ways that traffic, parking and events will be handled by the University to avoid controversial community discourse.

Coffin stated that the University has supplied towing signs to the surrounding businesses in attempt to control unruly student parking. She also stated that OSU-Cascades has set up a hotline that students, as well as community members, can call at any time to make a direct complaint about parking issues.
