Bookless bookclub

Bookless+bookclub

The newest book club, is unlike all others. The biggest change? No books are needed. TED Club is a book club for people who don’t have time to read, explained club founder, Kirsten Hostetler. TED Club meets once a term to bring students, staff and faculty together to discuss relevant and important issues using TED Talk videos in a book club setting.

“TED Club is meant to be fun, doesn’t require a time commitment, and helps you meet people from all over campus,” said Hostetler.

TED Talks are videos of lectures usually 18 minutes or less and “…covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues,” (http://www.ted.com/about/our-organization)

Dr. Shirley Metcalf, President of Central Oregon Community College, spoke at the first inaugural TED Club meeting held this past week. Dr. Metcalf gave insight towards “Kare Anderson: Be an opportunity maker”.

Writer Kare Anderson shares her own story of chronic shyness, and how she opened up her world by helping other people use their own talents and passions,” (http://www.ted.com/talks/kare_anderson_be_an_opportunity_maker) After the video, Metcalf brought out some points that she thought to be important and was even able to bring a personal touch by tying her Ohana culture into her presentation. Ohana is an idea in Hawaiian culture that family.

After club members observe the chosen Ted Talk, they break into smaller groups to discuss questions provided by club administrators. They are then brought back in to discuss as a group their different views and opinions toward the TED Talk.

TED Club founders Kirsten Hostetler and Cat Finney provide snacks along with additional reading materials related to the topic being presented, including books available for check-out and eBook versions.

The next TED Club meeting will be held during the winter term. Truman Merrifield, ASCOCC president, will be the guest speaker.
