National Scholastic Competition

Lia Tuas, from Summit High School, won a silver key and a $500 award for her piece of art displayed in Pence Hall during the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

This month Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) Pence Hall Gallery will be exhibiting the Scholastic Art & Writing winners. Eight hundred students from Portland, Central Oregon and Willamette valley, grades seven through 12 submitted art pieces that were judged on a regional level.The pieces were judged on originality, artistic vision and technical skill. One hundred five students in Central Oregon received honorable mentions and 203 students were awarded silver or gold keys. The gold key winners’ pieces and portfolios will go on to be judged nationally in New York City. Students who are recognized there have their art displayed at Carnegie Hall.

Pat Roberts, an art teacher at Pilot Butte Middle school and the co-coordinator of Central Oregon’s portion of competition said, “The most exciting part of this experience is giving the students the opportunity to be recognized for, creativity, artistic vision and technical skill. There are about six thousand students in Central Oregon and they are all emerging artists in some way.”

Bill Hoppe, art teacher at COCC also coordinates the show by way of the Pence Hall Gallery.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are 94 years old and has been in Central Oregon for eight years. Oregon became involved with help from art teachers such as Bill Hoppe and Pat Roberts. In this exhibition, 22 educators are representing 16 artists.

Moe Anderson, pottery teacher at COCC and instructor at Bend Waldorf said, “I am so proud of my seventh and eighth grade students, featured and unfeatured in the show.”

She thanked Bill Hoppe, Bill Cravits and Colette Hanson for making it possible for her students to use the COCC campus while they worked on pottery.

Minoy Mendenhal, photography and graphic arts teacher at Mountain View High School said that being  a part in the competition has been, “delightfully overwhelming.”

Many parents, students and teachers mingled during the setup of the gallery. Hailey Kavanagh, junior at Mountain View High School, has been featured in the show since the eighth grade. This year she won a gold key for her shoes made from recycled material and two silver keys for her dresses made from Mod Podge glue, recycled books, sheet music and encyclopedias. She said her favorite part was wearing the dresses.

Artists such as Andy Warhol, Ken burns and Sylvia Plath have been featured in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards throughout its many years. This year’s award ceremony is on Feb. 6 from 1–2 p.m. in the Pickney Auditorium at COCC. The gallery will be on display for the entire month of February.

Hailey Kaavanagh, Grade 11 from Mountain View High School, received a silver key for this dress which she made from sheet music. She also received a gold key for a pair of shoes that match the dress. The Shoes will be exhibited in New York at Carnegie Hall.
