On The Cutting Edge Of Change

On The Cutting Edge Of Change

Molly SvendsenThe Broadside staff would like to give a hearty welcome back to all returning students, staff and faculty. For all the newcomers–we’re glad you’re here!

As we begin a new year, we’d like to point out a change in our publication. Starting this term, we are transitioning away from being a weekly campus newspaper by reducing our in-print publication to every other week.

Our reasoning for this change is not simply based on budget, even though statistics from the Pew Research Center show, nationwide, print media ad revenue is down 50 percent from from 2007 to 2012.

We also do not believe that “print media is dead.” The Broadside will continue its 62-year tradition of print publishing.

However, times have changed. On a national scale, the face of media has seen dramatic changes over the past ten years. In July, 2013, The Oregonian changed course regarding its daily coverage and distribution, and will be sold only on newsstands on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Gone are the days when you have to wait until the morning paper comes before finding out breaking news. Instead you can just pull up the news feed on your choice of social media accounts conveniently located on the iPhone you keep on your person at all times.

Thanks to social media, breaking news is reaching a larger audience at the fastest rate it ever has. Following the lead from many other media sources, we will expand our multimedia platforms to bring you the most up-to-date news through our website, thebroadsideonline.com, Facebook, Twitter, etc. We will continue to make every word we publish count by writing informative stories that appeal to our audience.

Let us reassure you –  The only thing changing is the publication schedule.

We pride ourselves on being an academic learning environment for students. By slightly changing our structure we will be able to better prepare students for industry standard work in journalism and related areas. Our bi-weekly trainings on a variety of journalism topics will be open to anyone interested in joining.

We look at the year ahead with anticipation for the great things the campus and community have to offer. Please join The Broadside as we dive into the future of media and news coverage.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to join our staff during this exciting time, stop by our newsroom, Campus Center Room 102.
