Everything you need to know about summer term

Summer attendance

Returning students may have noticed that the parking lots and bookstore are a little less crowded than they were at the start of the previous term. The reason for this is that there are 3,350 full time students registered for the summer 2012 term, as compared to the 7000 that typically register for the fall, winter and spring terms. This is typical, according to Aimee Metcalf, the director of admissions and registration. She said summer term usually has about half the number of registered students as the three previous terms. She attributed the difference to student exhaustion.

“I think a lot of our students are just ready for a break,” said Metcalf. The lower rate of registration for summer term could also be related to the fact that k-12 schools let out for summer. The average age of a Central Oregon Community College student is 30 years old, according to Metcalf, so many of them need to take the summer term off to take care of their children while they’re out of school.

Growth

While only half the number of students register for summer term as for fall, winter and spring, registration and attendance has still grown exponentially over the last five years, according to Metcalf.

“This [registration rate] is what our other terms used to look like,” said Metcalf. “And the summer term used to be half of that.” Metcalf said that the biggest factor playing into the increase in registration is the economy. She said that with people losing their jobs, more people are coming to COCC to learn different job skills.
