Broadside and Students Win Top Journalism Awards

The Broadside newspaper and several student journalists will receive Region 10 Mark of excellence awards for two-year colleges in the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists competition. The final top three place in each category will be announced on March 31 in Tacoma, Wash.

The finalists and their categories are:

Derek Oldham, sports photography
Tobey Veenstra, editorial cartooning, breaking news,
Alyssa Wilder, feature writing
Tobey Veenstra and Kirsteen Wolf, in-depth reporting

The Broadside, Best All-around Non-Daily Student Newspaper,

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism, according to the SPJ website. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Entries are first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners advance to the national competition and are recognized at SPJ spring conferences. National winners will be announced in early May.

SPJ Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
The Broadside is the independent weekly newspaper of Central Oregon Community College and Oregon State University – Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon.
