COCC’s community learning registration starts Dec. 5

Registration for Central Oregon Community College’s Community Learning winter classes will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5.

The schedule includes more than 250 new and regular noncredit offerings to build job skills, start new hobbies and meet new friends.

Classes in computers, recreation and health, business, language, cooking and art are held in Bend, La Pine, Madras, Prineville, Redmond and Sisters. Online courses in computers, language, writing, business, health care and personal development start every month.

Class schedules are being mailed to residents who have taken a class in the last two years.

Schedules are also available at COCC, local chambers of commerce and libraries and on the Web.

Students can register by mail, e-mail, fax, telephone, on the Web or in person. To register, call 541-383-7270 or access noncredit.cocc.edu.

COCC’s Native American Program hosts John Trudell

Central Oregon Community College’s Native American program is hosting “An Evening with John Trudell” at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Pinckney Center for the Arts on the COCC Bend Campus.

Trudell was a spokesperson for the Indian of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969-1971. He then worked with the American Indian Movement serving as the Chairman from 1973-1979. In 1982, Trudell began recording his poetry to traditional Native music and his album, “AKA Grafitti Man,” was dubbed the best album of the year by Bob Dylan. He has also played featured roles in the films “Smoke Signals,” “Thunderheart”
and “Dreamkeeper.”

Cascades Winds Band presents Fall concert

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will open its 2011-12 season, under the direction of music director Dan Judd, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at Summit High School auditorium.

The concert will feature an afternoon of sacred music. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desire,” Brahms’ “Blessed Are They” and Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia” will be included as well as works by American composers Alfred Reed, Elliot del Borgo, Frank Ticheli and David R. Holsinger.

The concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band is comprised of gifted musicians from many walks of life whose common thread is a love of wind band music and the desire to perform it at the highest possible level. All players volunteer their time and talent and pay tuition to play.
